History: The Messerschmitt Me 163 Komet was the first rocket powered
aircraft. Actually an all-wing glider. Design was begun in 1939 and the first
unpowered test flights took place in 1941. The Komet first saw combat May 13
1944. This version, the B-1a, was the most common - 279 were built between May
1944 and February 1945. The Me 163 Komet was a very fast but very short range
interceptor used primarily to down incoming allied bombers during the last year
of the war. The design had various problems and proved less than effective.
If you would like to see this unique aircraft, the National Aviation Museum in
Ottawa has two examples.
Excuses: This model is as close an approxiation as I could manage with
FS4/AAF. While I cannot vouch for the technical accuracy of the flight model,
it does seem to generally match the Me 163's performance. Since FS4 makes no
provisions for rocket powered craft it was neccessary to cut fuel to almost
nothing to keep the range within the 163's 80 miles. This model's gliding
ability is probably much too good - but, given the limited fuel, extra glide
will be much appreciated over lake Michigan with no carrier in sight.
More Excuses: Another design limitation is the landing gear. The 163 took
off on a two wheeled dolly, which it left on the ground, and landed on a sprung
skid (ouch!). The FS4 version has retractable gear but if crash detect is off
it can be landed on its skid. You may wish to land in a field near the airport
to avoid digging up the asphalt! Also, I have left out the triangular side
windows as I could not get satisfactory display, and the fuselage insignia
which is too small for FS4 to display with any accuracy.
Flight Notes: As the real engine could only be lit and turned off you should
go to full throttle and leave it there during flight for maximum realism. When
you are set-up for landing (if you haven't run out of fuel - the real 163's burn
duration was 7 1/2 minutes) shut the engine off and glide in. Be careful landing
though, the fuel was very unstable and the Komet had a tendency to roll onto its
back during landings. By the way - no brakes! Careful at Miegs!
